'Jumper Ooters' Terrorise Tourists!

Sarah Merry gets a soaking and a scaring in the alleyways of Old Edinburgh!

Edinburgh - Adam Lyal [Deceased] Introduces Agnes!

A large-nosed woman appears from the shadows of the old 'entry' and disappears again almost as quickly.

Screeching, cursing, splashing us with water from her bucket, she dashes through the crowd and away round the corner of the street below, her apron flapping as she runs.

'Meet Agnes, an old fishwife. She married a fish!
says Adam Lyal [deceased], by way of introduction.

The Witchery Tour takes us through the scenes of many horrific tortures, murders and supernatural happenings within the historic Old Town of Edinburgh.

We are guided through cobbled streets and narrow entries, amid tales of body-snatchers, torture and plague victims. These light-hearted stories stem from historical sources but have enough elaboration thrown in to create the jokes.

'Under the cloak of darkness' our guide is the well-known city character and highwayman, Adam Lyal [deceased]!

Edinburgh - 'The Mad Monk' Looks Hopefully For A Kiss From The Ladies!

Selecting a member of the audience, he subjects her to a number of tests and leads a friendly chant of 'Burn The Witch'!

He is joined at intervals throughout the tour by 'Jumper Ooters' - including 'Agnes', the afore-mentioned fishwife and 'The Mad Monk' [not only mad but also ugly].

On his final appearance the Mad Monk stands hopefully as Mr Lyal asks the ladies to 'give the poor monk a kiss'.

The highwayman and his friends are dressed to impress and put on an enthusiastic and energetic performance, lasting about 75 minutes.

Edinburgh is packed with things to do and places to see, so what better way to learn a little about its history and get your bearings in the city than to be guided and beguiled with stories by a deceased highwayman?!

A Word Of Warning:
This Tour Is Not For The Faint-hearted!
